Babe Ruth Signed Cover 1930, Original Hall of Famer, Paired With A Grantland Rice Signed Cover, Legendary Sportswriter. George Herman Ruth Jr. (1895 - 1948) Babe Ruth "The Bambino", "The Sultan of Swat" spent 22 seasons in baseball and is considered to be one of the greatest sports legends of all time and certainly one of the greatest ball players in history. His impact on sports and pop culture is virtually without peer (the late Muhammad Ali, possibly), representing for many an America of a simpler time. Ruth appears in biographies, histories, films, novels, and his name the Baby Ruth candy bar (Grover Cleveland's daughter notwithstanding). He was one of the original "Immortal Five" the first to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ruth played for the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees and the Boston Braves and remains one of the most popular subjects with regards to sports collecting today. Offered is a special cover celebrating the inauguration of air mail service from Rochester, Minn. signed by the pilot and postmaster, addressed to Ruth and dated March 8, 1930. It is signed boldly and clearly by Ruth above his name. Cover has been archived beautifully and in excellent condition.
Also included is a very appropriate pairing of a signed cover by one of the all time great sportswriters in history, Grantland Rice (180-1954) Rice, a brilliant journalist whose spellbinding reporting could make his subjects seem nothing short of heroic. He championed Babe Ruth for years and remarked that in the 1920s the only two other legends that approached Ruth in popularity was boxer Jack Dempsey and racehorse Man O War.
