Leaf from the London Polyglot Bible (New Testament) (1654-1657 A.D.). Leaf from the London Polyglot Bible New Testament (Acts 22-23), Londini: Imprime Thomas Roycroft. Edited by Dr. Brian Walton, an Anglican priest, divine, and scholar, it included nine languages: Hebrew, Chaldee, Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Ethiopic, Greek, and Latin. Published in six great folios, it was one of the first English books sold by subscription (£10.). It was the typographical achievement of the century, and for it, Walton was consecrated Bishop of Chester, and Roycroft, the publisheer, was named the Kings Printer of Oriental Languages by Charles II. This leaf from the New Testament contains: (on the recto) the text in the Latin Vulgate and the Arabic and Ethiopic versions, each with a Latin translation (on the verso) the Greek Septuagint and the Syriac and Ethiopic versions, each with a Latin translation. One page, 17¾ x 11", with headlines, borders, and columns ruled in red to distinguish and separate the various translations. With some mild toning and a single hole at the lower left, this leaf is in fine condition for its age. Estimated Value $200 - 300
