Scott, Winfield (1786-1866). In the course of his 53-year military career, "Old Fuss and Feathers" served in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, the Second Seminole War, and the American Civil War, for which he conceived a key strategy in the suppression and ultimate defeat of the Confederacy.

Autograph letter signed ("W. Scott"), 4 pages, recto & verso, 10 x 8", Headquarters, Eastern Department, Philadelphia, May 11, 1822. To Colonel Hugh Brady (1768-1851). This fascinating letter outlines instructions -- nut and bolt practicalities -- for Brady in the establishment of a military installation along the St. Mary's River at Sault Sainte Marie in Michigan Territory near Lake Superior, a site strategically located along the northwestern frontier to guard against British incursions from Canada. "You will want among the other things, tool, nails, some locks & hinges -- also a good supply of ammunition…." The letter is creased horizonally and vertically to fit an envelope, with some minor discoloration along folds on the lower half of the first page. The text is remarkably clear and the paper mostly clean. The condition is nearly fine. Estimated Value $300 - 400

Realized $225
