Berkowitz, David Richard (1953 -). American serial killer and arsonist known as Son of Sam or the .44 Caliber Killer; he confessed to killings and injuries in eight separate shootings in New York City between 1976 and 1977. A media sensation at the time given the chilling frequency of murders and a letter left at a crime scene for an NYPD police captain, he created a fire storm of fear that was fueled further with columnist Jimmy Breslin publishing a letter from the killer in the NY Daily News. When Berkowitz was finally arrested, he confessed promptly, saying he was compelled to kill on command by a demon who possessed a neighbor's dog whose owner's first name was Sam.

Here is a handwritten scrawl of a confession 9¼ x 3½", signed and dated 10/29/78. Not 3 months after signing this note, Berkowitz held a press conference to say his previous claims of demonic possession were a hoax and that the killings were revenge for his failures with women and a world that left him behind. Estimated Value $250 - 350
