Lot 1415

1843-O $2.50 Liberty. Sm Date, Crosslet 4 NGC AU55. NGC graded AU-55. Mostly untoned and rather well struck for the commonly seen weak issue. The obverse and reverse show scattered handling marks from circulation, but none are too deep. The mintmark is much larger on 1843-O quarter eagles than seen on the 1840-O or 1842-O coins, and this larger mintmark style continues in use after this year. The 1843-O is the most plentiful issue of the 1840s and these can be obtained in grades above the Choice Mint State level. Despite what the mintage implies, there are still likely fewer than 1,000 of these around today, a small sum when compared with many issues of the 19th Century (PCGS # 7731) Estimated Value $550 - 600

Realized $588
