Lot 877

1854 N-9 R2 "Dartboard Obverse" PCGS graded MS64+ Brown. Lustrous light olive brown and steel with faded mint red covering 10% of the obverse, 40% of the reverse. A very attractive cent. The only defect is a faint spot of slightly darker toning at the right corner of the eye, and this spot contains microscopic traces of carbon. The reverse is flawless. MDS, die state b, showing die clashmarks on both sides and a very shallow low spot on the cheek and neck (low spots caused by debris on the die are almost always present on this variety regardless of the die state). The stray 1 that was punched into the right side of the ear is clearly visible, and a portion of the top of the 8 is also visible off the right foot of the Y in LIBERTY. Apparently the person responsible for adding the date to this obverse die decided to test the punches in the center of the die, thereby creating the "Dartboard Obverse" variety. Our grade is MS62+ close to MS63, and tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex Jack Collins 6/3/1978-Doug Bird-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:1298 (Brown collection envelope included).
