Lot 851

1852 N-3 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and light olive brown with traces of faded mint red showing on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks are a few dull nicks at the bottom of star 7 and a dull vertical nick right of star 4. Scarce LDS, die state c. Extensive die lapping has caused the base of the 1 to become very thin and the die crack through TE in UNITED no longer reaches through the wreath to CE in CENT. The reverse die is not rotated (most of this variety come with a significantly rotated reverse). Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census but second finest of those known in the late die state. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 2 in 65, 1 in 66.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Smilski 2/10/1990-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/2006:20509.
