Lot 848

1851 N-37 R4 PCGS graded MS64+ Brown. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with peeps of faded mint red showing on both sides. Looks flawless to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a small horizontal nick right of the upper lip, a couple microscopic ticks above and below this nick, and a pair of small spots of different (not darker) toning between star 6 and the dentils. Nicely struck M-LDS, die state b late. The die lines from the dentils under star 13 are short and dull but still visible and the field is rising around UNITED. The small lump on the base of the T in CENT is clear. A very nice example of this tough die variety. Our grade is MS62+, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65.
Estimated Value $750-UP.
