Lot 797

1847 N-3 R3 Repunched Date PCGS graded MS61 Brown. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate. Satiny luster shows in protected areas and this cent has nice eye appeal, but there are some contact marks. The notable ones are a pair of thin nicks on the cheek, a dull rim nick over the right side of the first T in STATES, and a dull scratch that skips across the devices from the C in AMERICA to the N in ONE. M-LDS, die state d/e. There are clearly defined rim cud breaks at ST and above the O in OF, but the usually seen rim cud at ER in AMERICA is not present. A close examination reveals no trace of this third rim cud, but the rim in that area is relatively narrow due to a slight shift in die alignment so certainty is elusive. Logic dictates the three cuds should not have formed at the same time, but a definitive example with less than 3 cuds has not been seen. Careful examination is recommended. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net EF45. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 5 finer: 3 in 64, 2 in 65.
Estimated Value $150-UP.
