Lot 668

1823 Restrike EF45. Frosty tan and light steel brown blending to darker steel brown in protected areas. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago. No marks, only very light friction on the highpoints. E-MDS with two die cracks on the obverse and no die cracks on the reverse. These "Restrikes" were struck outside the mint using legally obtained discarded dies. The obverse is from the 1823 N-2 die, and the reverse is from the 1813 S-293 variety. Both dies were rusted, and ample evidence of that shows on both sides as small lumps on these restrikes. They were struck for collectors by Joseph J. Mickley between 1862 and 1870.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex Tom Reynolds-the Norman Wolfe collection.
