Lot 528

1798 S-154 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair, Double Struck, NGC VF Details, Damaged. Dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and there is no verdigris. The only marks of significance are some scratches, including a collection of scratches at the profile of the mouth and jaw and a pair of relatively deep parallel scratches over EN in CENT. LDS, Breen state III< with obvious swelling at TED and AM in addition to a fine radial die crack from the dentils to the upper edge of the bust. This cent was struck twice with a vertical shift of about a millimeter between the impressions. Sharp doubling is visible on nearly every device on both sides. The two dates overlap vertically. A curved depression over the back of the head suggests a third strike may have occurred with a new blank planchet positioned off center between the obverse die and the obverse of this cent. Perhaps for that reason the folks at NGC decided to call this a "Multi Struck" mint error. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8. The "Mint Error" and "Multi Struck" features are mentioned on the NGC label along with the attribution and Mervis provenance.
Estimated Value $600-UP.
