Lot 523

1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair, Double Struck, NGC graded VG8. Medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are reasonably smooth but there are areas of minor roughness on both sides, particularly at the top of the head and at TES in STATES. No verdigris or significant contact marks. EDS. This cent was struck two times, and the results are rather dramatic. The first strike was centered on the planchet. The cent failed to eject from the coining chamber and was struck a second time about 5-10% off center to K-11 and rotated perhaps 10 degrees counterclockwise relative to the initial impression. Two strong, partially overlapped dates are visible along with ample evidence of the first strike on both sides. A great mint error of a rare die variety. Our grade is net G6. The "Mint Error" status and "Double Struck" features are mentioned on the NGC label. The attribution and Mervis provenance are also noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Adam Mervis, Heritage 1/10/2014:2638.
