Lot 470

1794 S-55 R2 F12. Sharpness VF25 or a bit better where the designs were fully struck but covered with fine roughness. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a small, dull dig under the F in OF and a thin planchet fissure slanting through the M in AMERICA (as struck). Frosty mix of medium chocolate and dark olive brown, a bit speckled. The date is readable but relatively weak due to an uneven strike that is strong at the top of the obverse and weak at the bottom. Conversely, the bottom of the reverse is strong, the top of the reverse weak. The die faces must have been out of parallel alignment. The die crack from the dentils to the hair under the cap is clear.
Estimated Value $650-UP.
From the Norman Wolfe collection.
