Lot 2036

1845-O. NGC graded AU-55. Frosty and mostly untoned. This issue is a complete contrast to the 1843-O Small Date, first off, only 4,000 were struck, and from that meager start perhaps 75 exist today. Curiously the entire issue of 1845-O quarter eagles was delivered on January 22, 1846 so these were included with the 1846-O coins. The surfaces are pleasing, with bright yellow gold throughout and luster in the protected areas. As nearly always seen on this issue, there is a shallow mint-made depression in the field behind Liberty's neck curls down to the point of the 13th star. Trading is sparse for this issue, and high grade examples like this rarely come to market. It may be years before a comparable coin appears! This issue compares favorably with some of the rarest C and D mint coins, but is priced much lower--for now. When the true rarity of the 1845-O quarter eagle is better understood, expect coins like this to become prohibitive in price. Pop 8; 11 finer, 10 in 58, 1 in 60. (PCGS # 7739) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.

Realized $8,813
