Lot 2034

1843-O. Large date, plain 4. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC Approved. Lovely rich golden toning. This is the second rarest of the New Orleans issues, as the Large Date variety is quite scarce. Most collectors fail to realize just how scarce this issue is until they try to find a nice example. Only 76,000 believed to be struck but based on the number surviving this may be too generous. The website CoinFacts estimates that only 85 of these exist in all grades. On the Large Date, the 1 nearly touches both the truncation and the dentils below, also the 4 has a plain crossbar, while on the Small Date, the 4 has a Crosslet 4 with a serif on the end of the horizontal stroke of the 4. A prize for the Coronet quarter eagle specialist! Pop 8; 22 finer. (PCGS # 7732) .
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500.

Realized $2,468
