Lot 2023

1804. 14 Stars On Reverse PCGS graded Genuine AU Details BD-2 Rarity 4. Repaired. Merely 150 to 200 examples are estimated to have survived. Well struck and primarily untoned. A popular date that is tough to find in any grade. The reverse die was likely a leftover one that was engraved in 1798, but with the blundered star count of 14 stars instead of 13. They are arranged in the "Star Cross" pattern with the stars placed in straight lines, and this style was abandoned in mid 1798. Perhaps the blundered star count kept this die on the shelf until near the end of the series, when design changes loomed, and this blundered 14 star reverse die was pressed into service (PCGS # 7652) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
