Lot 1437

1856. PCGS graded Proof 64. A hint of light gold tone. Only 30 examples have long believed to have been minted, but that number may be too low as roughly double that number appears in the population data of PCGS and NGC. What is known is that these are tough to find today, and while a few more may be been struck than traditionally believed, that does not diminish the desirability of this lovely coin. One other point of interest is noted here, that is the Proof reverse die suffered some sort of injury and was repaired, evidence can be seen both above and below the right wing of the eagle, and all Proof 1856 quarters examined show these unusual heavy die polishing lines. Pop 8; 3 finer in 65. (PCGS # 5552) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Realized $4,994
