Christy, Howard Chandler (1872-1952). American illustrator and portraitist. Displaying artistic talent at an early age, Chandler studied under William Merritt Chase and began working illustrating periodicals. During World War I Christy's posters promoting government war bonds, the Red Cross, and volunteers popularized the "Christy Girl" -- a beautiful and emancipated woman. Christy's sitters included Presidents, society women, celebrities, and military leaders.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Howard Chandler Christy"). Three pages, 5 x 7¾", Duncan Falls, Ohio, January 26, 1914. On "The Barracks" stationery. To Paul Eldridge. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope. Some age toning and minor soiling, mailing folds, and adhesive residue on verso of envelope. Overall, condition is very good.

A very nice letter from one of America's foremost illustrators, presumably answering questions from a fan:"…I am certainly very glad you liked the illustration for the Valley of the Moon. I am sending a little note and sketch to Miss Gladys whose sketches are very interesting…The cosmopolitan [Cosmopolitan Magazine] engages me to illustrate the storie [sic]. The writer probably does not know who is to illustrate the story…my work keeps me so busy that it is difficult to get away even for a day. Enjoy life here in the country where there is out of door exercise. You would like this place which I named 'The Barracks' on account of my fondness for the Army having gone through the Santiago Campaign in Cuba -- and this home and studio filled with relics. It is said to be the most beautiful view in the state of Ohio."
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
