Audubon, John J (1785-1851). Famed artist known for scientifically accurate portrayals of American birds. With almost no training in art or science, Audubon depicted hundreds of birds, accurately sized with realistic colorings, in their appropriate surrounding flora.

Autograph Note Signed ("J.J. Audubon"). On a single sheet, 7½ x 3", n.p., January 5, 1837. In black ink. To his "dearest friends". With four vertical folds, an adhesive on four corners of verso, two small spots of toning at lower edge, and rough upper edge. In very good condition overall.

In the midst of the four printings of Birds of America, Audubon pens this fragmented note: "Please attend to the above. The materials cost here 32 Dollars and fifty-cents Cartage. Ed Harris is not yet come. I have your 2 letters of the 19th and 29th of Nov! Will write June. The Superb is in the roads and I hope it will sail tomorrow morning. God bless you both. Yours faithfully."
Estimated Value $1,600 - 2,000.
