Lot 1109

San Francisco - Sutro Tunnel. One page, 9½ x 12", n.p., n.d. Being a printed diagram of the Sutro Tunnel with notations in Sutro's hand. A rare and historic item. Minor edge toning, minor foxing. Overall, very good to fine condition.

Adolph Sutro's 1869-1879 tunnel project, a masterpiece of mining engineering, made it possible to drain and ventilate the many mines in Nevada's Comstock Lode region. It took 10 years to build the four mile long tunnel under the Sierra Nevada Mountains and by the time Sutro's Tunnel was complete, the mining boom had ended, although the parts of the tunnel were used into the 1940s. Sutro himself sold the tunnel and moved to San Francisco, amassing the finest private library west of the Mississippi (lost in the Great Fire), serving as mayor of San Francisco for many years and working ceaselessly to promote the interests of the booming city.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.
