Apulian. Large Red Figure Bell Krater, ca. 380 BC. Painted by the York Painter, this spectacular piece is dynamic. Depicts a nude Apollo seated left, holding a lyre and laurel branch, being crowned by Artemis, wearing peplos and holding two spears. Before him, a laureate Marsyas, also nude, holding a makhaira and flutes. Reverse: Three young men conversing wearing himations. Pub. Trendall, Rvap II, p. 21, No. 4/210b. The scene on the front of the bell krater refers to the myth of when satyr Marsyas, a skilled flutist, challenged Apollo to a music competition. Apollo won the competition and had Marsyas flayed alive for daring to challege the god and losing. The scene depicts the moment when Apollo was crowned winner.
