Collection of Six Torah Binders (Wimpels). Lot of Six Torah Binders (Wimpels), 20th Century, plus "Torah Binders" by Ruth Eis. Eis indicates that "Typically [wimples] are made from the cloth which covers the new-born male during the circumcision ceremony. This cloth is cut into four parts which are attached to each other in various ways to form a long, narrow band. The function of this band is to secure the scroll of the Law [Torah] and keep it from unwinding." The first one is impressive in size (10' x 5") and design-featuring menorahs surrounded by lions-in needlepoint embroidery with lining and fringed edges; very good condition. The second is 8' 7 ½" linen with medium-size embroidered flower patterns and tiny patterns near edge; very good condition. The third is 9 ½' x 8" silk with flower design, lined; fair condition, frayed near both ends. The fourth is 10' x 7", lined wool with tapestry-like flower design; very good condition. The fifth is 6' x 7", machine-embroidered cotton; good with a few scattered tiny holes. The sixth is 10' 10" long by 5 ½" wide, with beautiful needle work decorative pattern.
