Muir, James Nathan. Bivouac. James Nathan Muir (born 1945) and resident of Sedona Arizona where he owns his own foundry, is a supremely accomplished artist whose bronzes are highly prized. Interpreting historical themes, his works focusing on the Civil War are absolutely stunning. Here a deceptively simply sculpture entitled "Bivouac" (temporary camp without tent or cover) Muir captures the hardship and strife of the Civil War by his astonishing detailed work depicting three percussion muskets leaned up together. Hanging from the guns is a hat, canteen, and two ammunition pouches, one with C.S. markings. Below the guns, laying on the rocks, there is another C.S. marked pouch on a belt with a C.S.A. belt buckle and a bayonet with scabbard and frog. Remarkable command of capturing fabric, leather and metal. Signed and dated by James Nathan Muir, 1987. Measures 25 1/2" tall, with 11 1/2" triangular rotating wooden base. Weighs about 9 pounds and while not heavy buyer responsible for outside shipper most especially for the extra care necessary to protect the bayonets.
Estimated Value $500 - 800.
