Lot 953

1937-D. 3 Legs. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A well struck superb gem example sparkling with intensely lustrous surfaces further enhanced by delicate overtones of steel blue and golden iridescence. Worthy of a premium bid and destined for a top Set Registry collection of PCGS coins. None are graded higher and this is one of only 8 seen this well preserved by PCGS.

The richness of the toning is surpassed only by the intensity of the luster! Do not let this one get away if you demand the very finest and most appealing example of this blunder imaginable. It will simply blow away any competition with its amazing quality and eye appeal.

This historic blunder was created under normal coining circumanstances but went a little further than expected. Apparently the feeding mechanism in the coining pres jammed up, causing the planchets to stop flowing into the press. The dies hit each other instead with no blank planchet between them. This caused the reverse die in this case to receive part of the obverse design into its fields. The coiner fixed the jam in the planchet feeding device and took the dies out to see how badly they were clashed. Apparently bad enough to need filing. The coiner that day was new to the job, a Mr. Young according to Breen, and he took an emory stick out and filed off part of the field where the clashmarks were located. In so doing he also removed the foreleg of the bison and weakened other details as well. Citing production quotas inspectors failed to notice and the dies were put back into the press and the 3 Legged Buffalo nickel was born. Only limited quantities were struck, and gems like that are precious and few in number. An outstanding opportunity to secure one of the most popular and desirable mint blunders of the 20th Century and destined for an advanced collection! Pop 8; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 3982) .
Estimated Value $50,000-UP.
