Lot 357

1854 Judd-160 Pattern Cent Rarity-4 PCGS graded PR63 Brown. Glossy medium brown and tan mixed with dark bluish steel brown and chocolate. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago. No spots or contact marks. The fields are smooth and reflective. There are clear die clashmarks right of the E in ONE but none on the obverse. Struck on a copper planchet with a diameter is 25 millimeters versus the 28 millimeter diameter of regular large cents of the time, and the weight is 95.8 grains versus the 168-grain standard. These smaller pattern cents were designed to help combat the rising cost of copper as the cost of copper for a large cent had increased to more than a cent (sounds like today). Our grade is Proof-60. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 33; 58 finer.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Tom Hyland 7/28/2008-John Koebert.
