Lot 3131

Great Britain. Plain Edge Pattern Proof Shilling, 1787. ESC-1241(incorrect on holder). Geroge III. Obverse, richly ornate draped laureate bust of King right by Lewis Pingo, struck en medaille in a collar. GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA, border of dots both sides. Reverse, cruciform shields, crowns in angles, garter star at center. Beautifully toned in shades of deep ocean blue and absolutely mint state. Slight ripple on the flan as is often the case with these extremely rare experimental 18th century Proofs. NGC graded Proof 63.

Lord Effingham, Master of the Mint, authorized Lewis Pingo to make just 168 proofs of the Shillings and Sixpences from the new dies. There had been no currency pieces such as these for nearly 30 years, and the authorities were keen to show the superior quality of the new coinage. The figure includes 100 of each coin for the Directors of the Bank of England.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,000.
