Lot 286

1831 N-12/3 R5 (as a die state) Large Letters Reverse G4. Sharpness G6 but there is a dull pinch on the rim over star 7 and another at star 11. These marks left a subtle bend in the planchet at those two places. In addition there are some fine pin scratches on both sides, especially in the field before the portrait and over ENT. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the toning is an attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Rare VLDS with a huge "Harpooned Whale" cud break covering 5 points of star 13 and nearly two points of star 12. (In the slightly more common terminal state the tip of the lower left point of star 12 is also covered by the cud.) This cent is plated to represent the G6 grade in the Dave Bowers "Grading Coins by Photographs" book, page 81.
Estimated Value $150-UP.
Ex Tom Hyland 6/11/2009-John Koebert.

Realized $223
