Lot 1339

1855-C. PCGS graded AU-53. Only 9,803 minted of this key issue from the Charlotte Mint. Survivors are sparse today, probably given the location in the deep South with the pending conflict about to erupt across this fair land. Gold coins, and silver as well, soon went into hiding. Many of these were no doubt melted. Toda there are no more than 175 to 200 known in all grades. Furhtermore this is the rare Type 2 style of Gold dollar, which is always in high demand. This issue has the distinction of being the most worn with an average grade in Very Fine, the lowest average grade of all Gold dollars! Thus finding a handsome, high end AU like this really offers the collector an important chance to secure this prized issue. Always poorly struck on the CA of AMERICA, diagnostic and seen here. Traces of luster in the recessess of the design and around the letteirng. Clean surfaces with nice golden toning. Pop 15; 22 finer (PCGS # 7533) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.
