Lot 111

1794 S-24 R1 PCGS graded AU58. The "Apple Cheek" variety, so-named because of the high-relief cheek of Ms Liberty. Choice lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel with smooth, nearly flawless surfaces. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal is outstanding in every respect. Just a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices from mint state. The only notable mark, and it is barely visible, is a tiny planchet flake near the dentils left of the bottom of the cap. M-LDS, Breen state V, with a die crack from the dentils just right of the 4 up through the bust to the upper neck where it fades out, a lighter crack from the dentils down through the L to the junction of the cap and hair, and several wavy die defects just right of the denominator. The central part of the reverse is clearly bulged outward, but ONE CENT is strong. The strike is sharp and almost perfectly centered on a beautiful planchet. This important example of the "Apple Cheek" variety is graded AU55 Choice and CC#7 in the Noyes census. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#6 honors. Our grade is AU55. The finest example of the variety listed in the census of collections formed by the "Boyz of 1794" is also graded AU55. The obverse of this cent was plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and it comes with an outstanding provenance that can be traced back more than a century. PCGS population 3; 1 in 63.
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.
