Darrow, Clarence (1857-1938) American lawyer and civil libertarian; one of the most famous trial lawyers in history, best known for the Leopold and Loeb murder trial and the Scopes "monkey" trial. Autograph letter signed, 1 page, on engraved personal letterhead, 8½ x 5¾ in. (Chicago), Oct. 26 (1927). To Rev. Edgar Thomas Read: "I have complied with your request. I like your letter and wish I might sometime see you. One of the mysteries to me is how religion can make one cruel and intolerant, and yet it often does.
