Greeley, Horace (1811-1872) Editor, reformer, politician. His newspaper, The New York Tribune, was the most influential U.S. newspaper from the 1840s to the 1870s; he used it to promote the Whig and Republican parties, as well as opposition to slavery and a host of reforms. In 1872, Greeley was the Liberal Republican Party's presidential candidate; he lost in a landslide and died before the electoral votes were counted. Collection of four autograph letters signed, all having to do with lectures: 1. ALS, 1 page, on a small note sheet, 6¾" x 4¼", brown ink, New York, Nov. 18, 1853, to H.M. Goodwin, regarding a lecture in Milwaukee: "…which assures me that I can leave in the morning and lecture at "U." in the evening…" 2. ALS, 1 page, on a small note sheet, 6¾"x 4¼", brown ink, New York, Dec. 11, 1853, to H.M. Goodwin, regarding his travel schedule. 3. ALS, 1 page, on State of New York Constitutional Convention letterhead, New York, Sept. 14, 1867, to Henry, regarding a future lecture. 4. ALS, 1 page, 9¼" x 7½", brown ink, New York, Oct. 14, 1843, to Thos. Dunnell, accepting an invitation to lecture. All difficult to read, as usual, with Greeley.
