Carnegie, Andrew (1835 -1919) Scottish American industrialist who led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He was also one of the highest-profile philanthropists of his era and, by the time of his death, he had given away to charities and foundations about $350 million (valued today at $4.76 billion). Carnegie called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, and it stimulated a wave of philanthropy. Typed letter signed in black ink, on "Andrew Carnegie / 2 East 91st St. / New York" stationery, 1 page, blue typescript, New York, April 25, 1917. To Doctor George F. Kunz (renowned mineralogist), 505 Fifth Avenue, New York City: "Words fail me in thanking you for your very kind letter. My trusteeship of Cooper Union has always been a great source of satisfaction, and I am gladdened by your sincere appreciation of what that institution is doing. The handsome volume which accompanied your letter [not present]…now occupies a prominent place on our library table…referred to from time to time, and exhibited to appreciative callers." Age toned. Three minuscule pin holes top left margin. Horizontal and vertical folds. Otherwise in very good condition.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
