Smith, Charles F (1807-1862) Career Army officer who served in the Mexican and Civil Wars; during the latter, he injured his leg jumping into a rowboat, leading to an infection that claimed his life. He was an instructor of Grant's at West Point. Smith's skills as a leader were such that Sherman commented,"Had C.F. Smith lived, Grant would have disappeared to history after Donelson." Scarce autograph letter signed ("C.F. Smith"), 1 page, 9¾" x 7¾", brown ink, West Point, N.Y., July 29, 1835. Holograph address leaf with manuscript postage and circular red West Point cancellation. To Rev. Philip Lindsley, Nashville, Tennessee. In part: "Your letter…to Lieut. Col. DeRussy, requesting an extension of the leave of absence heretofore granted to your son, has been received….I am directed to say that…Cadet Lindsley is authorized to remain absent until the 28th….Will you please to communicate this to your son…." Vertical and horizontal folds. Minor age toning and a few faint stains. Includes a glossy photo of an engraving of Smith, black & white, 10" x 8".
