Lincoln, Abraham - Life Mask and Hands after Leonard Volk. Plaster Lincoln life mask, 12 x 8 x 7 in., cast by American sculptor, Leonard Volk, April 1860. Volk later cast Lincoln's hands, each approximately 3 x 6 x 3 in. Lincoln's right hand was still swollen from shaking so many supporters' hands after his Republican Party nomination.for President. To steady his hand in the mold, Lincoln cut off a piece of a broom handle to hold for the casting. Volk later placed the piece of handle in the cast displayed here. Lincoln remembered the first sitting for Volk, in 1860 in Chicago, as "anything but agreeable";` not surprising, as the mask hardened so fast he had trouble pulling it off. Mask and hand castings presented here are from P.P. Caproni & Bro., Caproni Casts Made in U.S.A, Boston, c.1909.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
