Harding, Warren G. Typed letter signed as President, on White House stationery, 2 pages, 8¾ x 6¾ in., Washington, D.C., May 26, 1923. Toned; light staining. To Mr. Henry L. Stoddard, editor of The Evening Mail, New York City, N.Y. President Harding responds to Stoddard's advice and views regarding the Conference on Limitation of Armaments, the World Court and The League of Nations: "I think myself that the accomplishment of the Conference on Limitation of Armaments has never been fully appraised, and I feel no less confident than you that further big results are possible in bringing nations together around the conference table…I look forward to such a proceeding very soon to follow our adherence to the World Court. We can not reasonably hope to be as influential as we ought, if we arrogate to ourselves that superiority which demands putting aside everything which the world has done without us and then assume to say 'destroy what you have done and we will furnish you an ideal substitute.'…agree with you about the desirability of emphasizing our hostility to war and our determination to do every consistent thing toward diminishing the likelihood of armed conflict, not alone for ourselves but as a course to the world…It would not be in accord with my conception of honesty or duty to drop the World Court matter. I believe in it with all my heart…I can be as emphatic as anyone in saying the League of Nations is not for us…The activity of the extremists who favor the League are only greatly embarrassing the situation as to the court and are not in any way helping the cause they are seeking to espouse…Let me repeat, I am very glad to have had your letter. There are valuable suggestions in it, and I will make sure to employ them in some of the addresses which I have in mind…".
