Eisenhower, Dwight D. Typed letter signed ("D.E."), on "DDE" letterhead, 1 page, Palm Desert, Dec. 22, 1961. To Irving Geist, thanking him for his Christmas package and describing how he enjoyed some of the edibles while Mamie was out shopping: "…around lunch time I got hungry -- and Mamie was in the midst of her two and a hal [sic] hour shopping spree. So Moaney opened your gift…." Sgt. John A. Moaney joined Eisenhower's personal staff in August 1942, when Gen. Eisenhower was in England planning the invasion of North Africa. Moaney served as Ike's valet for the next 27 years, until Eisenhower's death. The two men were close friends.
