Weizmann, Chaim (1874-1952) Zionist leader and Israeli statesman; the first President (1948-52) of modern Israel (1948-1952). Autograph letter signed ("Chaim"), 1½ pages, on stationery engraved Oakwood, 16, Addison Crescent, W.14, London, Jan. 31, 1925. In Russian, with English translation. To his ex-fiancée, Sophia Sonia Getzova, a pathologist, who wants an appointment at the Microbiological Institute of Hebrew University. "…it is impossible to make any appointments now because the director of the Institute has not yet been appointed. His nomination depends partly on the American doctors….As soon as it is known, I'll present your candidature to Rosenthal and shall, of course, support it….I've explained how matters stand both to Leo and to Einstein….I have only limited influence in this Institute, which is getting its entire financial support from the American doctors, and any precipitate step on my part might spoil the chances of success…."

Published in English translation in Letters and Papers, Series A, volume. XII., from a photocopy in the Weizmann Archives. This is the only known letter from Weizmann to Sophia after their engagement ended.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
Sotheby's, May 15, 1997, lot 92.
