Noah, Mortecai Manual (1785-1851) American editor, journalist, playwright, politician, lawyer, court of appeals judge, New York Port surveyor, a major in the New York military and an ardent utopian Zionist. Document signed ("M.M. Noah") as Inspector of the Port of New York, 1 page, 4¼ x 10½, New York, Dec. 30, 1831. Certifying that a box of hyson tea, containing twelve pounds, was imported from Canton by John A. Brown & Co. in the American ship Italy whose master was Putnam. Signature slightly faded. Noah was a founder of New York University and put forward the idea of a Jewish hospital -- Mt. Sinai --which came about after his death. He was the most famous Jew in America when he died.
