Tobiasse, Theo. The Pigeon and The Lovers of Notre Dame. Theo Tobiasse (1927-2012) was born in Israel but at age seven, his family moved to Paris. Between the years of 1942 and 1944 when the Germans occupied Paris he and his family were forced to hide with the constant fear of being discovered. The only things that kept Tobiasse sane were books and his drawings. By war's end, he had created quite a portfolio. In 1950 he moved to Nice where he continued to paint. He had his first exhibition at the Palais de le Mediterranee in 1961 winning the grand prize. In Nice, the city he had adopted on leaving Paris, his pictorial expression came into its own his subjects rapidly evolved towards reminiscences about his childhood, then further into fantasies that varied from Biblical themes, themes of exile and interpretations of the cities and places he loved. Offered here from likely the 1970's is a monumental example of his work bursting with energy of Paris and celebrating the glory of Notre Dame. Absolutely mesmerizing technique and command of color. Oil on canvas measuring 38" x 51" framed to 46" x 58" a significant work by this celebrated 20th Century artist in perfect condition. Buyer responsible for 3rd party shipping.
