Lot 48

1797 C-1 R2 1 over 1 Variety VG7. Struck over a 1794 Talbot Allum & Lee Cent with New York. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. No roughness or contact marks. Very late die state (VLDS), Manley state 5.0 late. The details are uneven thanks to a shattered obverse die and the effects of undertype designs still visible from the TAL Cent. The date is clear, including the errant 1 over the normal 1, but ERTY and portions of the reverse legend are missing due to the effects of significant die failure. Parts of NEW YORK and ship's rigging from the TAL cent are clearly visible at the top of the obverse. Weight 92.6 grains.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz-Jack Beymer.
