Lot 246

1817 N-9 R2 Reverse Brockage VG8. Slightly sharper, particularly on the incuse (brockage) side, but there is a dull scrape in the leaves under the A in STATES on the "normal" side. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker steel and olive brown toning in protected areas. The brockage (incuse) side is bold and evenly impressed, and it is aligned perfectly with the normal impression. Both sides are very slightly off center to the top. EDS. The crack at OF AMERICA is light and the dentils are crisp. The die crack allows one to determine the year and variety, and the crisp dentils indicate this piece was struck when the reverse die was relatively new. A bold, very impressive mint error that was produced when a struck cent failed to eject from the coining chamber before a second planchet was inserted and struck by the reverse (hammer) die on one side and by the reverse of the previously struck cent on the other side.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
