Lot 195

1797 S-127 R4 F15. Sharpness at least 5 points better but there are a few light contact marks plus traces of faint granularity on both sides. The notable marks are a couple dull scratches hidden in the die rust that covers the obverse fields, a minor rim bruise opposite the neck, another small rim bruise at the E in UNITED, a pinprick at the bottom of the O in OF, and a couple tiny marks at NE in ONE. No verdigris. Frosty medium steel brown and chocolate with some darker olive brown tones on the right side of the reverse. M-LDS, Breen state IV, showing extensive roughness from die rust and vertical scaling in the obverse fields. A clearly defined die crack meanders down from the dentils behind the head. An attractive cent in spite of the minor defects. Called VF30 net VG10 in the Noyes census, his photo #28236. Bland says VF25 net F15. Removed from a PCGS slab where called "Genuine, XF Details, Environmental Damage" (PCGS label #1422.97/28440197 included). An interesting die state of a tough variety, and it comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
