Lot 190

1796 S-93 R3 Draped Bust with Reverse of 1795 VF30. Variety with a "Hyphenated Date 7-9." Sharpness AU50 but there is an area of very fine roughness around TY in LIBERTY and a small area of corrosion on the edge of the rim over IC in AMERICA. Otherwise the only mark is a shallow planchet flake near the dentils left of the lowest curl (as struck). Lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy light chocolate brown and olive with slightly lighter brown toning in protected areas. MDS, Breen state III late. The die crack through RICA to the rim at either end is clear as are die clashmarks on both sides. A lighter die crack connects the tops of ER and another reaches from the center of that E through the left foot of the R to the leaf under that C. This is an intermediate die state not listed in the Breen encyclopedia showing some but not all of the state IV elements. This cent offers nice eye appeal in spite of the imperfections, and the dash between the 7 & 9 is strong.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

Realized $4,230
