Lot 1689

1842-D. PCGS graded AU-53. Untoned, with typical orange-gold shades throughout. The strike is reasonably sharp too, with Liberty offering nearly full definition on her curls and the eagle's feathers too. The original mintage of 4,643 pieces suffered the expected high attrition rate, and today there are less than 100 examples known. This issue is nearly as rare as the famed 1840-D, and is one of the toughest to find above EF from the Dahlonega Mint. Pop 5; 12 finer, 7 in 55, 5 in 58. (PCGS # 7725) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Realized $7,638
