Lot 899

1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. Frosty light steel brown with subtle overtones of light bluish steel. Mint red covers 15-20% of the planchet. There are a few tiny specks of carbon scattered over the obverse, none visible without the aid of a glass. This cent looks choice but a strong glass reveals several microscopic hairline scratches on the neck and jaw with some escaping into the field before the neck. MDS, die state b, the usual hoard die state for the variety. As usual the strike at the top of the obverse and the opposing area at the bottom of the reverse is a bit soft while everything else is nicely struck. Our grade is net AU58.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

Realized $317
