Lot 723

1849 N-1 R4- AU55. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown. Essentially flawless; the only mark is a light horizontal nick in the center of the cheek, and this may be a pre-striking planchet mark. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned long ago but the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, with a strong die line through the center of the O in OF (Newcomb's #15) but no crumbling in the bottom of the R in AMERICA. A series of narrow rim cuds shows clearly from star 6 to right of star 9. Tied for CC#5 for the variety. Finest known of the die state in the Grellman census, and the next best grades only EF45.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Heritage Auction #1177:7226-Doug Durasoff.
