Lot 684

1847 N-38 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Glossy reddish chocolate brown with faded red in protected areas on both sides. The notable marks are a speck of carbon very well hidden in the hair over the R in LIBERTY and two more in the field right of the inner curl, plus a thin vertical nick in the field left of star 12. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #16) with a die clashmark at the bottom of the neck plus die lapping lines covering the obverse fields. The earlier die lines at the inner curl are gone. Our grade is mint state sharpness net AU58+ for the tiny carbon spots. A relatively modest cent that comes with an impressive provenance. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 37358) .
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex James O. Sloss, Abe Kosoff 10/21/1959:254-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/7/2009:820.
