Lot 683

1847 N-34 R5+ VF30. Sharpness EF45 or better but there is a reddish chocolate splash from star 4 to star 5 plus two smaller splashes at stars 6 & 7 and a tiny one at the bottom of the I in UNITED. These reddish splashes contains microscopic roughness. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and the toning is a very attractive glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Traces of mint color show in protected areas on both sides. There are a few light contact marks on the cheek. Nicely struck M-LDS, die state c. Both dies have been lapped and a light die crack arcs across the reverse from the D in UNITED to the R in AMERICA. The fields on the reverse are slightly reflective thanks to the die polishing. Not perfect but still one of the sharpest examples known of this rare die variety. Tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
