Lot 682

1847 N-32 R4 MS63. Lustrous bright original mint red fading to steel brown on the devices, two-thirds of the original red remaining. The only marks are a pair of thin, nick-like planchet voids on the jaw, as struck. These two flaws catch your eye and detract from an otherwise fantastic gem cent. Rare LDS, die state f, with a strong rim cud break over TES in STATES. Called MS63 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census for the die variety, his photo #31545. Tied for CC#2 overall but finest of the late die state in the Grellman census. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS63RB (PCGS label #37344.63/18900188 included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance).
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Barney Bluestone 3/4/1943:93-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/1976 (via Del Bland)-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/7/2009:805-Chris McCawley 2/2011-Doug Durasoff (the Blaisdell and Naftzger collection envelopes are included).
