1817 N-16 R1 15-Star Obverse, Obverse Brockage. NGC graded VF-20. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown fading to medium chocolate brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a light rim bruise at star 3 and another even lighter one at star 11. EDS. A spectacular obverse brockage mint error, made even more significant because we are left with 30 clearly defined stars. The normal and incuse (brockage) designs are perfectly aligned with each other but the strike was very slightly off center to K-9. An obverse brockage error is created when a struck cent fails to eject from the press and a new planchet is inserted and struck. The obverse side of the second planchet is struck by the obverse die while the "reverse" of the second planchet is pressed into the obverse of the previously struck cent, thereby creating the incuse design. While this type of mint error is quite rare, having it occur on the unique 15-star obverse design is indeed remarkable. Destined to be a highlight of any collection. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8. The attribution and Mervis provenance are shown on the NGC label.
